We cannot believe Halloween is right around the corner! The summer in Milwaukee flew by and as we look forward to Fall and all that is to come (Fair Trade month, in-store events, and tons of prep for the holiday season) we certainly don’t want to miss the opportunity to savor one of our favorites. On a day when children (and adults!) consume so much chocolate, we think it is important to take some time to actually educate ourselves on WHAT we are consuming. Often it looks like chocolate and tastes like chocolate but in reality it’s a whole bunch of child labor rolled into one little deceiving bar.
What’s that you may ask? Well, what you may not know is that much of the world’s cocoa is harvested in abusive situations, often times by children, forced into labor, enslaved. Much of this takes place in African countries, especially the Ivory Coast, which grows most of the world’s cocoa used in chocolate bars sold by major companies all around the world. There are many articles and blog posts that do a great job of highlighting this issue and ask the question- why don’t U.S. consumers demand something different for their chocolate? To learn more, take a look at The Inconvenient Truth About Your Halloween Chocolate and Forced Child Labor by mom and social justice blogger at Rage Against the Minivan and Chocolate and Child Slavery: Say No To Human Trafficking This Holiday Season on the Huffington Post.
Throughout the year we sell tons of Divine Chocolate, delicious bars made by the only fair trade chocolate company owned by its cocoa farmers. This season, we want to offer you the opportunity to purchase mini bars of Divine Chocolate as an alternative to the traditional Halloween candy you may be used to handing out to trick-or-treaters. Complete with a special note stating what they are eating and why fair trade is important, it is sure to spark some good conversation and help change the way we look at chocolate.
