Milwaukee: A Fair Trade City

Did you know that Milwaukee became the first major city in the United States to be named a “Fair Trade City?” In 2007, Mayor Tom Barrett and the Milwaukee Fair Trade Coalition, along with the strong support of Alderman Tony Zielinski, succeeded in passing a Common Council resolution declaring Milwaukee a “Fair Trade City.” This effort was part of the Fair Trade Towns Campaign that began in 2000 to help grow the fair trade movement around the world. And it has! Today, there are over 30 towns in the U.S. and 1,100 around the world. There are various requirements that must be continuously met to maintain our city’s fair trade status.

It is thanks to the residents of our great city who continue to support fair trade and demand that more fairly traded products be made available. Four Corners of the World is proud to call this city home! Together we are helping to make a difference in the lives of producers around the world and working to build a more just global economy.
