Fair Trade Tagua Bracelets from Ecuador
At first pass, tagua nut sounds like a yummy food one would find alongside a bowl of cashews or almonds. But in fact, the tagua nut is the seed of the Ivory Nut Palm tree, a native species of the South American rainforest, especially found in Ecuador and Colombia. This unassuming seed is collected by indigenous farmers and distributed to artisan groups who sculpt and ‘clean-up’ the tagua nut creating a smooth surface which can then easily be colored into beautiful hues of blues, golds, greens, reds, pinks and much more. The final result- stunning pieces of jewelry including necklaces, rings, earring, and bracelets which we carry!
But I haven’t even spilled the beans (or nuts in this case!) about the best reasons to buy tagua jewelry. Not only does it provide a better income for indigenous people in Ecuador or Colombia than working in often abusive industries such as banana plantations but the tagua nut is also a natural and sustainable product of the rainforest. Since harvesting the seed happens when the pod falls to the earth, the farmer does not destroy any part of the local, natural habitat. The tagua nut is also considered an alternative to elephant ivory since the dried and polished seeds (uncolored) look incredibly similar.
By wearing tagua jewelry, not only will you be super fashionable but will also be able to say that you are supporting both people and planet. Come in to Four Corners before next Tuesday to receive 10% off your tagua bracelet…we have a large variety of colors and styles to choose from!
