Product Pick of the Week: Deliciously Roasted Fair Trade Coffee from Just Coffee Cooperative

I think I have mentioned this before, we at the store have a coffee addiction. Maybe it’s the smell, the taste, the much needed caffeine (all of the above) or maybe it’s the fact that this is one of the simplest ways to support fair trade on a daily basis. If you are a coffee drinker, you are going to have a cup each morning. Why not just swap out your conventional beans for ones that are fairly traded, where you know that the growers have earned a fair wage for their labor allowing them to send their kids to school and invest in their own futures? How easy is that?! And trust me, I always think fair trade coffees taste even better since high quality is a must in the fair trade industry.

Many years ago, I bought a bag of fair trade coffee that had a bike on the label. I thought the label had a really great design and I loved biking so it was an immediate eye catcher. Well, I loved the coffee and started reading more about this company that not only worked with groups of coffee growers all over the world to bring excellent coffee to market, but believed that fair trade was more than just a label, it was an opportunity to change the global economy. The company is Just Coffee, based in Madison, WI, and I still buy their coffee. I even served it at my wedding to all our guests!

• A few times a year they offer customized travel delegations to visit their fair trade cooperatives in different parts of the world (experiential learning!)
• They believe in long-term partnerships. They work with the same farmers’ cooperatives each year so that can count on high quality coffee and the farmers on consistent business. (relationships!)
• It’s just good coffee. (Have I mentioned that yet?!)
